Giant Panda

One of the most recognised bear species in the world, here are some facts you may or may not have know about them:

• Giant Pandas have a digestive system designed for carnivores however eat over 30 KG of Bamboo everyday. The result of this is that they must spend over 20 hours a day sleeping in order to recover from their exhausting digestive process.
• They have been around for over 8 million years however are considered threatened as there are only just over 1600 left in the wild.
• All wild Giant Pandas exist in the provence of Sichuan China, and within that only between 5 mountain ranges. Their habitat, as localised as it already is, now is shrinking due to the rapid growth and urbanisation of China.
• The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is the most successful government based Giant Panda breeding program in the world, however has not released a single one into the wild since it’s opening in 1987. 
  The Giant Pandas at this research centre are given 50 Kg of Bamboo a day, as they are “picky” and only eat 30 Kg of this.
